What to do if you’re in an accident

Getting into an accident is extremely stressful.  It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and completely understandable! That’s why we have put together this guide to assist you.

1) Stop everything and take a deep breath

Turn your engine off and take a deep breath. Remain calm and do your best not to panic.

2) Ensure that everyone involved in the accident is OK

Check yourself, your passengers, and then the driver of the other car including their passengers to make sure everyone is OK.

3) Emergency Services

If somebody is hurt, call 000 immediately and ask for an ambulance. They will ask you your location, what has happened, and what time the crash took place. Do your best to remain calm and follow all directions.

4) Safety at the crash scene

Make sure that you and everyone involved in the accident move off the road as soon as it is safe to do so. If somebody cannot be moved, direct traffic around the crash site until the emergency services arrive.

5) Exchange details with the other driver/s

Make sure that you and the other driver/s exchange your contact details.

Including: Full name, Licence plate, Driver’s licence number, Address, and Phone number, and the name of the Car’s Owner (if it isn’t the person driving)

6) Obtain other evidence

Getting the contact details of any witnesses is also a good idea, including taking pictures of the crash site, all vehicles involved, as well as street signs, pedestrian crossings, anything that is close to the scene of the accident. Taking photos of any bruises or injuries you might have can also help to provide context to any injuries you become aware of later down the track. These pictures may never be used, however they may end up being vital evidence.

7) Call your Insurance Company

Give your insurance company a call and talk them through what has happened. They may have other questions or instructions, however you should have everything they need by now.
